Summer Holds Many Opportunities!
by Executive Director Beth Koski

Spring is the time of year for renewals and new beginnings. After this past winter in Northeast Ohio, I believe we’re all ready for some fresh starts. I know I am!

Many thanks to Gloria Kaull for her steadfast diligence to the Arts Center’s grounds. By the time you receive this newsletter, I’m sure she will have already been pulling weeds, nurturing existing plantings and planning new ones for our summer season. This past winter she had two trees moved on the Center’s grounds as they were very crowded and starting to die. Thank you, again, Gloria for seeing a need and addressing it – as always in your quiet, unassuming way.

Early in May a dedicated corps of volunteers will be gathering to bring Straw Hat Theatre to readiness for our 2004 summer season. This takes hours of raking, cleaning, painting, and down right hard work. Our goal is to have the tent sides up the weekend of May 8th so we can resurface the stage area. Call the Arts Center if you’d like to help – we can use many, many busy hands.

Wow – speaking of Straw Hat – 190+ individuals showed up for auditions this year. That’s a record!! This promises to be a wonderful season - the hours, dedication and commitment expended by each participant - be it in front of our audiences or behind the scenes - is phenomenal! The talent and drive shown by those who have signed on is amazing -- all I can say is DON'T MISS ANY OF IT!!

Summer is a time of exhilaration for all of us -- after our darker and grey winters, we are blessed with what I believe is some of the best weather you can find anywhere. As a staff, we are rejuvenated and exhausted with all we offer during the three short months of June, July and August. We are teeming with people in our building taking advantage of our many programs from 9 AM until 10 or 11 PM daily. When others are enjoying their vacations, the Arts Center staff is very hard at work making those spare hours special times for many.

We thank you for your participation and support -- this is exactly what makes it all worthwhile for each of us. Many of our Center staff members have children of their own who would like to spend a week or so with his or her parent, and they may be involved in a Center program to do so, but our staff is committed and dedicated to our mission and to making your experience at the Ashtabula Arts Center the best you can possibly have.

We wish you wonderful renewal and great new beginnings this spring -- please join us for some fun, entertaining, and very special times over the next few months.

Thank you.
