Happy Holidays from all of us at the Ashtabula Arts Center!! As this festive season abounds with activities, lots of good food and camaraderie – it is a time when I always reflect back and count our blessings.
The Arts Center is so very thankful for the support of so very many - and there is one group in particular which should be highlighted – Women’s Service League of Ashtabula County (WSL).
WSL was formally founded in 1964 when the women of the Board of Trustees of the Ashtabula Fine Arts Center gathered a group of women bonded by a common interest in the Arts and the Community. In the early days, WSL assisted both the Ashtabula Fine Arts Center and the Ashtabula Playhouse. When these two entities merged in 1968, WSL focused its support on the Ashtabula Arts Center (AAC).
The WSL sponsors theatrical, cultural and social events. Money-raising projects have multiplied and expanded. Entering its 40th year, the group has raised over $400,000 for new programs, scholarships and the vitally important extra financial assistance needed by the AAC. Several additions to the AAC property have been made possible through the efforts of WSL. To list a few: the outdoor sculpture entitled “Together We Dance Alone," ceramics equipment, music equipment, theater seats, youth-sized chairs, an extension ladder, dance costumes, stage lights, VCR equipment, and much more.
WSL has expanded its support to other arts-related organizations within our area. They have donated financial support to the Good Life Singers, the Ashtabula Area Orchestra and Shea Public Auditorium. They have purchased art supplies for Happy Hearts and the Ashtabula Area City Schools, and they have underwritten programming for Community Counseling Center.
The support of the WSL throughout the years has been and continues to be of vital importance to the Arts Center. I cannot imagine where the AAC would be today if not for the dedication and commitment of this wonderful group.
WSL always welcomes new members. WSL officers for the current year are: Joslin Seeds, President; Kim Coxon, 1st Vice President; Lori DeCato, 2nd Vice President; Lora McIntyre, Secretary; Patti Lutrelle, Corresponding Secretary; Julie Boetger, Treasurer; and Jayne Koski, Parliamentarian. If you are interested in coming to a meeting to find out more about WSL, please feel free to contact one of the above individuals or to call me at the AAC.
The Arts Center salutes Women’s Service League for all its wonderful and deep support over the years. Thank you one and all.
Happiest of Holidays to Everyone!!
