Monday Classes

(C) Preschool Art Expression
For ages 3-5
11-11:45 a.m.

5 weeks beginning June 16
Preschoolers will explore the tools and materials used in making art. We will create with paint, paper, scissors, glue and lots of other fun materials. Children will learn to relate their projects to a story or idea and the season. They will receive instruction in the proper use and care of art materials and be encouraged to develop confidence through doing. Dress for a mess.

(C) Basic Drawing for Children
For grades 4-6

A class for kids who love to draw! Students will be introduced to the "tricks of the trade" that professional artists use as they use a variety of drawing materials to draw some really fun things!

(C) Clayheads: Pottery for Kids
For grades 4-8
4:30-5:30 p.m.

6 weeks beginning June 16
Students will have the chance to learn the basics of working on the potter's wheel and also use hand building to make great sculptural and functional objects!

(T,A) Beginning Pottery: Wheel Throwing and Hand Building
6-7:30 p.m.

6 weeks beginning June 16
This class will teach the basic techniques of both the potter’s wheel and hand building techniques with plenty of class time for practice and creativity. The class will also experiment with combining wheel thrown and hand built elements. Students who prefer to focus in one area may do so.

Tuesday Classes

(C) Mixed Media for Kids
For grades 1-6

What is mixed media anyway? This class will give kids who are interested in art a chance to use and combine a variety of materials. We will draw, paint, sculpt and construct. Students will be encouraged to stretch creatively while learning about how to use a wide variety of materials and techniques.

(T, A) Basic Drawing for Adults
6-7 pm

6 weeks beginning June 17
This class will teach some of the basic techniques that will help you make more realistic drawings. Drawing is the basis of all 2-dimensional art classes. If you think you might want to take up painting or pastels, start with a drawing class like this and you will learn to develop the skills needed to draw what you see.

(T, A) Watercolor Techniques

For adults interested in learning techniques in watercolor that will enable them to work on their own subject matter outside of the classroom setting. Each class will include demonstrations of technique and time for students to paint.

Students will work on a series of projects that incorporate all the basic methods of hand building in clay. All the projects will be bisque fired and glazed to create permanent works of art.

Six weeks beginning June 17
This class will teach the basics of handbuilding and sculpture in clay while creating projects suitable for display in the garden. Create a handmade bird bath, garden totem and more. Projects will be fired to permanence in the Arts Center kiln.

(C) How to Draw People
For grades 3-6

This is a great class for students who love to draw and would like to know the secrets to drawing people! Learn the correct proportions for drawing the head and body. Learn to flesh out your sketches to make your characters look more realistic.

(T,A) Mapping Out Portraits
5-6 p.m.
With Kristina Keenan
$30 class fee/$27 member rate
6 weeks beginning June 18
Learn how to create realistic portraits. The instructor will teach students how to use the average proportions of the human head to place the features of the subject. She will also demonstrate how to draw the subject from ¾ view. As time allows, students may also play with drawing the human head in caricature or cartoon style.

(T, A) Drawing with Mixed Media
6 -7:30 p.m.

8 weeks beginning June 18
In this beginning class, students will learn to draw what they see and render objects realistically. We will work with a variety of drawing materials including graphite, colored pencils, light conte crayons on dark paper and more. The instructor will supply the colored pencils, conte crayons, etc. to experiment with. Students will supply a sketchbook, drawing pencil and pink pearl eraser. Please do not purchase materials until we discuss at the first class.

Thursday Classes

Design your own T-Shirts or printed fabrics!
(T,A) Screen Printing for Textiles
2-3:30 p.m.
With Meeghan Humphrey
$40 class fee/$36 member rate
Four weeks beginning June 19
Did you ever want to make your own t-shirts? Students in this class will learn about the screen printing process from start to finish. Including designing images for printing, coating screens, exposing screens, printing images and reclaiming screens. Students will learn how multiple colors are printed. The Arts Center will provide emulsion, inks, screens and printing equipment. Some design work may be completed outside of class. Students will be expected to bring t-shirts or pieces of fabric to print during the last couple of classes. This is a great class for someone who has always wanted to design their own t-shirt or for textile artists who would like to create their own printed fabric panels.

(C) Miss Spider’s Tea Party
For children entering grades K - 2
2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Four weeks beginning June 19
Make your own fantasy tea set based on the book "Miss Spider's Tea Party". Students will read the book and create a tea pot cup and saucer of their own design. The last class will be a tea party for the kids using their creations.

(A) Stained Glass II

This class is for students who have completed Stained Glass I and would like to work on a more complex project. Leslie will help you take your skills to the next level. Students will choose from a variety of project offerings.

(T,A) Oil Painting 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. With Bonnie Selip$45 class fee/$40 member rate6 weeks beginning June 21Have you always wanted to learn to paint with oils, but were afraid to try? This is a beginning course that will teach the "A to Z's" of oil painting. The instructor will demonstrate how to apply paint, mix colors, form shapes, create texture, suggest lighting/time of day, paint summer and fall foliage, snow, water and sky. You will be encouraged to choose a good composition before you begin a painting and learn to paint what you see. Many of the classes will meet outdoors, weather permitting. A materials list is available at the Arts Center however; please wait to purchase materials until after they are reviewed at the first class. If you already have supplies, bring them to the first class session.

(T,A) Basic Digital Photography
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

plus a $35 materials fee
6 weeks beginning June 21
The class will cover basic photography and composition, camera functionality including manual and automatic settings, flash photography and "in camera" editing. There will be a class project each week. The cost of the class includes printing 60 4x6 photos at the Arts Center. Students will need their own digital SLR camera and a 1-inch 3-ring binder.

ONE WEEK CLASSES
(C, T, A) Painting with Texture
Mon. - Fri., June 16-20
Ages 10 & up

Work with various methods of adding texture to your paintings. Students will try their hand at impasto, wet on wet painting and using chemical reactions to add texture to paintings.

(C) Video Production: From Script to Screen
For grades 6-8
Mon. - Fri., June 16-20
2 - 4 p.m.
With Ian Jones
$95 class fee/$85 member rate
We will cover the basics of shooting and video editing, as well as delve into more advanced special effects techniques. The class will culminate in a group project to be written, storyboarded and shot by students and posted on Youtube. Students will be expected to have access to a digital video camera that can be brought to some (not all) class sessions and be used to complete out-of-class assignments.

(C) Creative Printmaking
For grades 6-8

Explore the possibilities of printmaking. We will print from a carved design, use photo-sensitive paper to create nature prints and more! The possibilities are endless!

(C) Papercrafts

Paper can be made to do almost anything. In this class, create your own embossed stationery & envelopes, make your own handmade paper, create marbled paper and handmade gift boxes. Students in this class will learn lots of new techniques that they can use at home.

(C) Bead a Bead a Bead

Make your own beads out of simple and inexpensive polymer clay. Meeghan will walk students step by step through the techniques needed to create beautiful, complex beads. Students will choose their own colors and make a selection of beads during the first four days of class. The last day will be devoted to combining the beads into jewelry. There will be plenty of beads for necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Once you learn how easy it is to create impressive-looking beads, you will want to create more at home!

(C) Nature Arts
For ages 7 and up
Mon. - Fri., July 14 - 18

Explore the outdoors through art. We will work outside as much as weather permits. Students will make a nature t-shirt using leaves, flowers and other items collected from the Arts Center grounds. We will also make fish prints, watercolor nature prints, stepping stones, sun prints and sand candles.

We will use paints, pastels, markers, ink pen, watercolors and colored pencils in all different combinations. The lesson plan changes for this class each session so new projects are always being offered. Mixed media can make for fascinating works by student artists. All materials will be provided by the Arts Center.

Learn to make your drawings really "pop" using lessons developed by Mark Kistler for PBS's "Imagination Station." Students will be introduced to concepts like, placement, size, shading, foreshortening, overlapping, and contour. Students will be able to take practice exercises home. The students will also be asked to sign the "Less Television, More Drawing" legally binding contract. These lessons are so fun, you will hardly know you are learning!

Become your own fashion designer!
(C) Fashion Designers Workshop

Imagine wearing clothes you designed yourself! Students will learn how to transform everyday items into something fantastic. Dye your own clothes, print your own patterns, embroider and bead. Projects will include a t-shirt, tote bag, jeans and a shirt. The Arts Center will provide the t-shirt and tote bag. You bring a pair of jeans that could use some jazzing up and a shirt to embellish. Use your imagination and lots of cool materials to really add some style!
