Ballet Theatre Ashtabula to Perform Spring Concert:
|
Posted: Wednesday, May 15, 2002
This spring Ballet Theatre/Ashtabula will return to the main stage with its mixed repertory program.
This program is always an audience favorite because it includes all styles of dance and music. This year will be no exception, with new works created to music by Pink Floyd, a Moby remix, Prokofiev, Cirque du Soleil, and the famous classical Pas de deux "Flames of Paris."
Clover Robinson has set three new works on the company which stretch the dancers in new directions. "James Bond" is a fiendishly fast jazz work reminiscent of the suave and sophisticated James Bond style. "Mythics" is a work based on mythical creatures, which will give the audience a closer look at movement that combines tribal energy and Mardi Gras flair. Robinson’s last work is an exquisite piece set to the music of Liszt. It depicts two beautiful sculptures that come to life and are awakened to the joy and the freedom of movement. The work is an intimate study in sculptural lines and shapes.
Also premiering this season is a dreamlike ballet set to the intense music of Pink Floyd’s "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." The music is so serene in parts, but in others the guitar and saxophone just wail away, creating a dramatic backdrop for innovative and provocative choreography.
Other works to be performed are an athletically exhilarating Piano Concerto No. 1 by Prokofiev, to be danced by a small cast including Meghann Orr, Randy Prill, Caitlin Dubsky and Katy Meara.
Also featured this concert will be a beautiful ballad by Dan Fogelburg, danced by Rachel Sass, and a classical ballet performed by Daniella Harley and a group of younger dancers to the popular ballet favorite Faust.
Performances of the Spring Dance Concert are Fridays, May 10 & 17, at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays, May 11 & 18 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, May 12 & 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets for the show are $8 general admission, $7 senior/student, and $5 children under 12.
Call the Arts Center for reservations, 964-3396.
