The Nutcracker:

A Holiday Tradition Returns to the AAC

Ballet Theatre Ashtabula will once again present the magnificent Christmas classic ballet “The Nutcracker,” with performances December 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, and 22.

In past seasons this holiday show has played to sold out audiences time and time again. With its blend of realism, fantasy, beautiful music, fabulous special effects and exciting choreography, the ballet is the perfect way to help to get patrons both young and old into the holiday spirit.

The first act of the ballet opens in the beautiful drawing room of the Stahlbaum family home. The audience watches as young Clara receives the wondrous gift of a Nutcracker doll from her eccentric godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. The Nutcracker, in the form of an ugly little man, is in fact an enchanted doll that later fights a fierce battle with the Mouse King to save Clara’s life.

During the battle scene the audience is treated to some of the most dazzling technical feats of the production. The sets grow before your eyes, as does Clara’s brave Nutcracker doll. Mice scamper about the stage in preparation for the arrival of the evil Mouse King. Under Herr Drosselmeyer’s watchful eye, the Nutcracker and the Mouse King do battle. In the end, it is Clara who saves the day by throwing her slipper at the Mouse King and distracting him long enough for the Nutcracker to deliver his fatal blow.

Clara’s bravery and devotion to the Nutcracker has broken the evil spell and the Nutcracker turns into a handsome Prince. He escorts Clara through the beautiful snow forests where snowflakes dance softly. They continue on to the beautiful royal kingdom, where dancers continue to entertain the couple.

The Nutcracker will run for a total of twelve performances, beginning with an 8:00 p.m. show on Fridya, December 6. Evening performances will be held at 8 p.m. on December 6, 13, 14, 19, 20, and 21, and 2 p.m. matinees will be held December 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22. The December 7 performance is already sold out.

Tickets are now on sale.
