Annual Spring Dance Concert features sultry, passionate rhythms
Ballet Theatre Ashtabula explodes onto the stage this May with dances set to different styles of music. The show opens Friday, May 7, and runs for two weekends, May 7-9 and 14-16.
This year entitled “Surrender to Passion,” the program will include four new pieces set to the sultry and passionate music of Carlos Santana. With a blend of congas, timbales, maracas, guitars and Latin rhythms, Santana's music is a unique blend of rock 'n' roll, blues, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and sensuous Latin flavor. His music has spanned five decades, and has sold more than 50 million albums. In 1998, Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Ballet Theatre Ashtabula will perform pieces choreographed to Santana's "Evil Ways," which reached double platinum status in 1969, "Oye Como Va," which went quadruple platinum in 1970, and "Smooth," a recent collaboration by Santana and Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas.
Shelagh Dubsky, AAC Dance Coordinator and artistic director of "Surrender to Passion," chose Santana's music for the company not only for the sultry rhythms and smooth Latin sounds, but also for Santana's musical philosophy. He has been quoted as saying, "For me in playing there are only two elements: emotion and grace." For Dubsky, this musical philosophy lends itself beautifully to dance.
In addition to the Santana music, "Surrender to Passion" will also include a flirtatious, high energy piece choreographed set to U2's "Discotheque.” This piece will include hard core dancing and stunning visual effects similar to those seen in the Pink Floyd numbers of last year’s Spring Dance Concert.
Other pieces in this year’s program include the famous "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets" by Sarah Vaughn, a sensuous guitar piece by Ottmar Liebert and a humorous piece set to a traditional piano rag.
Another new contemporary ballet has been set to the "Diamond Music," a piece of classical music which many will
recognize as the background music for "A Diamond is Forever" commercials on television.
Another new element to this year's show is the introduction of works choreographed to live music. Joshua Theilan, an Ashtabula resident who recently moved back to the area from New York City, will sing "Lately," by Stevie Wonder, as dancers perform on stage with him.
Anyone who witnessed last year's Spring Dance Concert, "Think Pink," saw the fantastic lighting and visual effects that
combined with the high-energy dance moves to make for a stunning, almost concert-like experience. This year's concert promises to be much of the same, as Lighting Designer Tim Dorman again brings to the stage a light, sound and movement spectacular sure to dazzle all the senses.
"Surrender to Passion" will be performed May 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m., and curtain for Sunday shows is 2 p.m.
Tickets are on sale now, and can be reserved by calling the Arts Center.
