Dancing Into Spring: "Dangerous Lines":
Posted: Saturday, May 07, 2005

By Shelagh Dubsky, Dance Coordinator

Ballet Theatre Ashtabula's spring concert will offer audiences an innovative and balanced program of new and established favorites. Many of the works fus luscious ballet movement with contemporary quirkiness.

"Georgia" is a romantic duet in which the dancers embark upon the passion and tenderness of a loving relationship. The music, by Ray Charles, is a well known classic and serves as a perfect backdrop for choreography by Clover Robinson. Also choreographed by Robinson will be "By Your Side" with music by Sade and "Hey Mama," a full company piece derived from African rhythms and movement. It's high energy and enticing pulse will lure audiences to a world of spirits and enchantment. This bold and rigorous new work to music by the Black Eyed Peas will also include young dancers from the After School Discovery Celebrate program during selected performances.

Rounding out the fun will be works set to music by Led Zeppelin and Billy Joel.
The "Diamond Ballet" with music by Karl Jenkins will return with its driving and heart pumping speed. Some will recognize the first movement of the ballet as "The Diamonds are Forever" ad campaign from a few years ago.

Also premiering this spring will be "Air and Interplay," a stunning and hypnotic duet to music by Bach, a Prokefiev pas de deux with breathtaking choreography and the beautiful and moving pas de deux to Elgar's "Enigma Variations." "Variation for One" will also be premiered this spring to the music of Philip Glass.
