BASKET WORKSHOPS WITH BEV NEWBOLD
All of Bev's classes are designed for beginner and up skill levels. All materials will be pre-cut and provided for the class.
Mother’s Tea Basket
Thursday, May 8, 5:30 - 9 p.m.

Class Fee: $18 Members/$20 Nonmembers
Materials Fee: $15 (payable to the instructor)
An 8-inch square basket done on a low “D” handle weaves just the right size for paper napkins. This basket also makes an ideal gift basket to fill with chocolates, a mug for coffee or tea, some notepaper and stamps, a book, or other little “stuff” for mom on Mother’s Day. Body of basket weaves 4 inches high. This is a great basket for the beginning student who would like to learn to weave.

Feathered Wall Basket
Thursday, May 22, 5:30 - 9 p.m.

Class Fee: $18 Members/$20 Nonmembers
Materials Fee: $20 (payable to instructor)
This wall basket employs a technique called “chase weave,” using both round and flat oval reed as weavers. It features a wide band at the bottom and top of the basket. An oak bushel basket handle will be placed on the back of the basket for hanging. A feathered pattern will be added to the front of the basket, using reed overlays. Basket base measures 6 inches wide by 3 inches deep. Body of basket weaves 9 inches high. Circumference at top of the basket is approximately 22 inches.

COOKING CLASS WITH DEBBIE LAPIERRE
Seafood Sampler
Thursday, May 15, 7 - 9 p.m.

$22.50 Members / $25 Nonmembers
Sample some succulent seafood selections that are simply sensational for springtime celebrations!

HENNA TEMPORARY BODY ART WORKSHOP
May 29, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Taught by Anzietta DiPierro
$15 Nonmembers/$13.50 Members
Henna is an all-natural pigment made from the dried leaves of the henna plant. There are many recipes of the mix. In this class, we will use a mix of high quality henna, eucalyptus oil and fresh lemons. The application is painless (applied with a squeeze tube the mixture tingles on the skin). Plan to spend 2 hours designing and applying henna to yourself or each other. (Drying time is approx.1/2 hour). Wear clothes that can be rolled up to apply the henna. The mud stays on your skin until it flakes off, and leaves a light yellow design which will turn brown in 1-2 days. The color (red or brown) and longevity of the design depends on individual body chemistry and where it is placed. Most henna decorations last 1-4 weeks. This class is intended for teens and adults.

AMISTAD PARADE WORKSHOP
Mondays, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Six weeks, beginning June 16

Taught by Meeghan Humphrey
$31.50 Members / $35 Nonmembers
The Freedom Schooner Amistad will visit Ashtabula September 5-7, 2003. The Arts Center will participate in the event by creating costumes and instruments for the students to wear in the parade on September 6th. The children will learn about the artistic traditions of Sierra Leone and create their own costumes based on what they have learned. Students will create gara cloth (tie dyed fabric) based on traditional techniques from Sierra Leone. The cloth will be made into costumes for the parade. Students will also create a large mask for their costume and construct their own instruments. The class will also work together to make a giant puppet to be carried in the parade. All students participating in this workshop and the parade will receive admission to the Amistad.

KIDS CLAY WORKSHOP
July 7, 9, 11, 14, & 16, 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Taught by Rebecca Stowell
$27 Members / $30 Nonmembers
You say you don’t have all summer to attend a clay class? Then try this two week class instead! Kids in this class will make yard art, a cereal bowl and juice cup, Mexican style sculptures and a Native American inspired pot. The last class will feature an outdoor raku firing of some of the pottery.
