Photographing the Night Sky Taught by Dennis Kortyka Three Week Workshop, April 7, 14 and 21 - 7-9 p.m. each class $40 Nonmembers / $36 Members Always wanted to photograph the night sky? Didn’t know how or where to shoot? This workshop will teach you about film, cameras and where to shoot. Star trails, the Northern lights, the moon and other infrequent occurrences. Have a telescope and would like to photograph through it at night? The instructor has more than a decade of experience in doing exactly that! He will show you the mechanics, the equipment you need, film requirements, and where to find interesting items in the sky. Almost any clear night is a great night to photograph and get some very interesting pictures! We will view some night sky photos, learn how to set up your equipment (including telescopes as a lens), and where to aim your camera to get some interesting and beautiful photos. Materials: 35 mm SLR with B setting, cable release and a tripod. If you want to try digital, you need to be able to expose for up to many seconds and need a tripod. Watercolor Workshop - Flower Painting on Mesa Paper Taught by John Peters Saturday, April 10 - 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (with a break for lunch) $35 nonmembers / $31.50 members John Peters returns to the Arts Center to offer a second workshop using watercolors on Mesa paper. The subject of the painting will be flowers. An example of the painting will be on display a the Arts Center. The Mesa paper will be supplied. However, participants will need to bring a quarter sheet of “stretched” Arches 140 lb. Cold press. For those of you unfamiliar with stretching paper, here is the process: soak paper for 15 minutes in water. Remove from water and place on board, then staple paper to board. Let dry on board and KEEP on board, do not remove -bring to workshop. A list of specific colors needed for the class will be available from the Arts Center previous to the workshop. Bring all of your regular watercolor equipment and get ready to have fun and produce a lovely painting. Hair Braiding Workshop Taught by Anzietta DiPierro Tuesday, April 13 - 6 - 8 p.m. $12 per pair (limit 12 pairs per class) Students in this workshop will learn many different braiding techniques, including a three strand French braid, a three strand classic braid, a five strand braid, and variations of the three and five strand techniques. DiPierro will also give tips on dividing and combing to create a professional look. All combs and pins will be provided by the instructor. The class is designed so that students sign up in pairs, with partners alternately learning the braiding technique and sitting to have their hair braided. All students must have at least shoulder length hair to participate in the workshop. Henna Temporary Body Art Taught by Anzietta DiPierro Tuesday, April 27 - 6:30-8:30 p.m. $15 Nonmembers / $13.50 Members Henna is an all-natural pigment made from the dried leaves of the henna plant. There are many recipes of the mix. In this class, we will use a mix of high quality henna, eucalyptus oil and fresh lemons. The application is painless (applied with a squeeze tube the mixture tingles on the skin). Plan to spend 2 hours designing and applying henna to yourself or each other. (Drying time is approx.1/2 hour). Wear clothes that can be rolled up to apply the henna. The mud stays on your skin until it flakes off, and leaves a light yellow design which will turn brown in 1-2 days. The color (red or brown) and longevity of the design depends on individual body chemistry and where it is placed. Most henna decorations last 1-4 weeks. This class is intended for teens and adults. Intro to Airbrush Taught by Sandy Shelenberger Wednesday, April 28 - 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. $18 Nonmembers / $16 Members This class is meant to introduce students to the art of airbrush. Sandy will demonstrate the mechanics of airbrush trouble shooting and airbrush basics. Basic strokes and stencil techniques will be introduced. Following demonstration, students will get to try their hand at using airbrush and using the basic strokes. A follow-up class may be scheduled if there is enough interest from the members of this class. Silk Scarf Marbling Taught by Venie Hinson Saturday, May 1 - 1-4 p.m. $28 Nonmembers / $25 Members includes one silk scarf blank (9”x56”) Extra Scarves are available from the instructor at $10 Students will learn the fine art of marbling, including materials, chemicals and equipment required. Students will begin by experimenting with patterning on paper, then go on to completing their scarf. There will be a wide variety of colors and paints to work with. The scarves are hand-rolled and sewn and made from 100% silk. Students should register 10 days in advance to allow the instructor time to order materials for the class. Payment is expected at time of registration. This class intended for ages 13 and up.
