"COMMERCIALIZED":

Local filmmaker to premiere second movie at Arts Center

The Ashtabula Arts Center is proud to host the premiere of the film “Commercialized,” a new movie from filmmaker Ian Jones. The movie will be shown in the theater on Friday, May 21, at 9:00 PM.

“Commercialized” is a mockumentary chronicling the trials and tribulations of the board of BubblePro, Inc., (a small company that makes bubble wrap) as they attempt to produce their first commercial.

Jones says that his primary influence for this picture was Christopher Guest, the director of such mockumentaries as “Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show,” and “A Mighty Wind.”

“What I love about his comedies is how he gently pokes fun at characters motivated by their own delusions,” says Jones. “His mockumentaries constantly point out the absurdities of everyday life, providing a wonderful way to combat one of the biggest problems affecting our society: people taking themselves far too seriously.”

Jones, a 2003 graduate of Edgewood High School, is currently studying filmmaking at Bard College in NY. His first movie, “Crazy Ray,” premiered at the Arts Center in January 2003. He says that this film differs from “Crazy Ray” in that it’s a bit more serious.

“While the broad parody-based humor of ‘Crazy Ray’ was based mainly on slapstick and sophomoric gross out gags, this movie is definately more focused on real characters as the source of its humor,” he says.

In addition to directing the movie, Jones also appears in the film as Loam Bixbie, the director hired by the board to produce the commercial.

Other actors in the film include Brian Mudd as the board president, John Hofmeister as his ambitious and resentful VP, and J.C. Mudd as the president’s none-too-bright brother.

The 90-minute film will premiere Friday, May 21 at 9:00 PM. Admission to the movie is $3.00.

MULTI-ARTS DAY CAMP
For kids in grades 1 - 6
Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Two Three Week Sessions, JUNE 21 - JULY 9 OR JULY 12 - 30
(There will be no camp on Monday, July 5. Same material taught in each session.)
$135 Members / $150 Nonmembers (Non-refundable $50 deposit required two weeks before camp begins.)
Parents should pack a lunch for campers each day, and children should bring a white T-shirt to the first session (for decorating).

Held at the Ashtabula Arts Center, this camp is an integrated experience for children who are interested in exploring the world of the arts. Each day will include instruction in dance, music, art and theater - all as part of a rehearsal for the musical theater production of “RATS: THE MUSICAL STORY OF THE PIED PIPER.”

All campers will participate in the production. Sets and costumes will be made in art class. Songs and lines will be rehearsed in music and acting class, while dances will be choreographed in the dance session.

All of the work will come together in a performance on the Straw Hat Theatre stage on the final day of camp.

This a great experience for young, aspiring actors to get their feet wet. Also a great experience for kids who aren't sure which aspect of the arts they want to pursue in depth.
