Alex Bevan to Perform at Coffeehouse:
Posted: Wednesday, November 06, 2002

Local favorite Alex Bevan will appear in a special coffeehouse performance in the gallery of the Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 22.

Bevan has been in the music business for almost 30 years, during which time he has recorded 12 albums. He began performing even before his graduation from Shaw High School in Cleveland, appearing at times with local Irish folk singers Gusty and Sean at Fagan’s Beacon House in the Flats.

In the 1970’s, Bevan began traveling the “coffeehouse circuit,” and also was seen as the opening act for such headliners as The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Livingston Taylor, Billy Joel, Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy Buffett. Many of these influences combined to help Bevan develop the lyrical “folk/rock” style for which he has become best known. In recent years, he has shied away from more “electrical” songs, and more turned towards the art of storytelling within his music.

Bevan is perhaps best known for his 1970s hit “Skinny Little Boy From Cleveland, Ohio.” It was this song, and the release of the album “Springboard” which elevated Bevan to his status as a “regional star.”

A native of Northeastern Ohio, Bevan has always kept this area a part of his music. He has performed solo shows at several clubs in the Cleveland area, and, in 1997, he recorded a live solo acoustic album at the Grand River Winery. One of his albums - “South Shore Serenade” - is dedicated to his beloved Lake Erie.

He has also written over 100 radio and television commercials, and won an Emmy for his postscore of NBC’s “American Promise” documentary segment “The Rustbelt Blues.” In addition, Bevan has produced children’s albums for Lake Metroparks and the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center.

Tickets for the coffeehouse are $8 general admission and $7 students. Cookies, pastries and coffee will be available throughout the performance.

Reservations are strongly recommended, and can be made by calling the Arts Center.
