Jazz Things Up at The Arts Center!:
|
Posted: Thursday, October 16, 2003
The Ashtabula Arts Center will present a coffeehouse performance by the Lighthouse Dixieland Jazz Band on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m.
The band’s style is that of the “early jazz” music once found in such cities as New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago. This genre is sometimes called “Dixieland,” hence the name of the group.
The Lighthouse Dixieland Jazz Band consists of six musicians, all of whom are active in many other musical arenas.
The leader of the group and the only original member still with the band, Rod Raker (cornet/trumpet) holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Illinois, where he played in the school band. He also lead the US Army’s 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment’s Dragoon Band in Nuremberg, Germany.
Jim Lindberg (tuba) also received some of his musical training while serving in US military, having studied at the US Naval School of Music for one year. In 1953, while playing on a Naval Fleet, he played for the coronation of England’s Queen Elizabeth. He later studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and has played with the Ashtabula Symphony and the Ashtabula Symphonic Band.
Pete Marshall (trombone) studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Florida State University, UNLV, and the Cleveland Institute of Music, and holds a BS in Music Education and MS in Education. Before his retirement, Marshall formerly served as a band director and music teacher in the Las Vegas school system. He now is a freelance musician, and has performed with such groups as the Frank Montenaro Big Band, the Ashtabula Symphonic Band, the Packard Band, the Ashtabula Area Orchestra, and the Blues Project.
When not teaching music at the Conservatory of Music at Mercyhurst College and the Ashtabula Arts Center, Geoff Wands (clarinet) plays as a freelance musician for the Lake Erie Ballet, the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, the Erie Chamber Orchestra, the Youngstown Symphony, the Canton Symphony Orchestra, the Wheeling WVA Symphony, the Dave Stevens and Doug Dressler Big Bands, and the Ashtabula Symphonic Bands. He holds a BA from the University of Central Florida and a MA in Music Performance from Illinois State University.
Martin Bliley (keyboards) is a freelance classical pianist and piano teacher who has served as an accompanist for the Mercyhurst College Dance Department, PA Governor’s School of the Arts and The Erie City Schools Opera. He has also written and performed in various radio and television commercials.
A Conneaut native and drummer since the third grade, Bill Johnston (percussion) holds a Masters of Business Administration degree and now teaches at Kent State University.
The coffeehouse performance will be held in the Arts Center’s gallery on Saturday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 general admission and $7 students. Cookies, pastries and coffees will be available throughout the performance, and are included in the ticket price.
For reservations, contact the Arts Center.
