The Ashtabula Arts Center will present a coffeehouse performance by the Lighthouse Dixieland Jazz Band on Saturday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m.
The band’s style is that of the “early jazz” music once found in such cities as New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago. This genre is sometimes called “Dixieland,” hence the name of the group.
The members of the Lighthouse Dixieland Jazz Band include Rod Raker on cornet/trumpet, Jim Lindberg on tuba, Pete Marshall on trombone, Geoffrey Wands on clarinet, Martin Bliley on keyboards and Bill Johnston on percussion.
All members of the group have been active in music for several years.
Both Raker and Lindberg received some of their musical training while in the military. Raker lead the US Army’s 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment’s Dragoon Band in Nuremberg, Germany, while Lindberg studied for a year at the US Naval School of Music. He also played for the coronation of England’s Queen Elizabeth while serving with a Navel Fleet in 1953.
A former band director and music teacher for the Las Vegas area school system, Marshall has performed with such groups as the Frank Montenaro Big Band, the Ashtabula Area Orchestra and Blues Project.
Wands is an instructor at both the Ashtabula Arts Center and the Conservatory of Music at Mercyhurst College. He also plays as a freelance musician for several organizations, including the Lake Erie Ballet, the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Erie Chamber Orchestra.
Bliley has served as an accompanist for the Mercyhurst College Dance Department, PA Governor’s School of the Arts and The Erie City Schools Opera.
In addition, Lindberg, Marshall and Wands are all members of the Ashtabula Symphonic Band.
The coffeehouse performance will be held in the AAC gallery on Saturday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7:00. Tickets are $8 general admission and $7 seniors/students. Cookies, pastries and coffees will be available throughout the performance, and are included in the ticket price.
