Children's Production of "Alice in Wonderland" On Stage
Join us for an imaginative trip down the rabbit hole and into a world of magical make-believe as the Ashtabula Arts Centers Youth Theater Production Class presents the classic fairy tale Alice in Wonderland, on the main stage for one weekend only, April 11, 12 and 13.
This musical version of Alice in Wonderland varies slightly from the classic tale written by Lewis Carroll, but is still appropriate for audience members of all ages.
The basic story remains the same: upon spotting a hurried rabbit with a pocket watch, young Alice curiously follows him into his rabbit hole. There she tumbles down into an imaginary world of memorable characters, including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Queen of Hearts. She engages in a Caucus Race, attends a Mad Tea Party, helps the Knave of Hearts at his trial, plays croquet with the Queen, and is almost beheaded, all before finally finding her way back home again.
The cast for this show are members of the Youth Theatre Production Class at the Arts Center, who have been rehearsing the show for the past ten weeks. Rehearsals have included full cast instruction two days a week, in addition to extra individual music rehearsals for the principle characters.
Being that the presentation of Alice in Wonderland is actually the culmination of the class session, the cast is also responsible for assisting with other parts of the behind-the-scenes portions of the production. This process makes this show different from others that children just try out for and act in.
Nearly 60 local teenagers and children are involved in Alice, some appearing on stage for the very first time.
According to director Linda Fundis, being involved with the class means the kids get the total theater experience. By this she means that the actors not only learn their lines and blocking on-stage, they are also responsible for helping to choose or make costumes and build set pieces for the show.
In addition, two young veterans of the Arts Center stage are moving behind the scenes in order to assist Fundis with directorial duties for this show. Recent Saints John and Paul graduate Jordan Malin tries her hand for the first time as assistant director and stage manager, while Geneva High School student Ryan Czerwonko serves as student director. Czerwonko even staged one scene in the musical himself, which Fundis claims was a new venture for him.
Cast members of Alice in Wonderland range in age from five to fifteen, although, according to Fundis, nearly half of the cast is under the age of ten.
This is a very young cast, said Fundis. This is probably the youngest cast Ive ever worked with. But it has been a really good group.
Principle characters include Lauren Haines in the title role of Alice, Carly Cash as the Cheshire Cat, John Brady as the Mad Hatter, Jessica Laurello as the March Hare, Emily Kline as the Dormouse, Tara Katchur as the Knave of Hearts, and Allison Adams as the Rabbit. Alyx Lynham and Emily Stolfer share the role of the Queen of Hearts, and Carey Ann Santiano and Kayleena Brashear appear as Caterpillars. Abby Svigelj and Jasneet Devgun share the role of Alices sister, Helen, in which they sing a stunning duet with Alice in the first scene of the show.
Alice in Wonderland will run for four performances only, Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for the show are $11 patron, $8 Adults, $7 Seniors, $6 Students, and $5 Children under 12.
