2003 Summer Season Announced:
|
Posted: Tuesday, May 06, 2003
Go back to camp, brush up on your Shakespeare, hang out in a Laundromat, and go on vacation with a corpse - all this summer at Straw Hat Theatre!
The 2003 season of summer theater at Straw Hat offers a little something for everyone. The season, which runs June 6 through August 30, this year features two comedies, one drama, one childrens show and one comedic musical revue.
The first show of the season is Krazy Kamp, a childrens musical which takes us back to the crazy days of summer camps gone by. When the director of Camp John Smith finds himself in some hot water, he must find a new home for his male campers until things are straightened out. Somehow he convinces the director of the neighboring female Camp Pocahontas to take them in for the summer - although the deal must remain a secret, especially to the camps owner. But neither director could know what was waiting for them once the two camps finally collided! Poison ivy victims, snake carrying campers, carnival workers, militant camp counselors and even a few celebrities make random appearances at the camp, making it almost impossible to keep any sort of order on the formerly serene grounds. With a score featuring Motown, pop and ballads, this show is a treat for all ages.
Krazy Kamp will run for two weekends, June 6 - 8, and12 - 14.
Next up is a chance to brush up on your Shakespeare with Kiss Me Kate, a musical comedy version of Shakespeares The Taming of the Shrew. Actor/theater manager Fred Grahams life is turned upside down when he is cast opposite his ex-wife in his theaters production of the Shakespearean drama. A play-within-a-play unfolds, as each of the four main cast members on-stage performances is complicated by what is happening in his offstage life! When the flowers that Fred sends to Lois, his current love interest and co-star, end up in the hands of Lillim his ex-wife, a fued ensues, and Lilli threatens to leave the show. Meanwhile, Loiss boyfriend, Bill, has signed Freds name to a gambling debt, and men have come to collect on the debt which Fred knows nothing about. The fate of the show - and the money for Freds new-found debts - hinges on Lillis decision to stay or go. A true battle of the sexes ensues - both onstage and off - as each character attempts to keep his life in order.
Kiss Me Kate will run for three weekends, June 20-22, 26-29, and July 3-5.
Finihsing out July is the Broadway hit West Side Story, running July 11-13, 17-20 and 24-26. Hailed by many critics as the worlds greates love story, this musical transports us to the streets of New York City, where two young, idealistic lovers find thier relationship caught in the middle of warring street gangs. Tony, the former leader of the Jets, meets and instantly falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo. Knowing that they can never be together in the neighborhood they each call home, the two plan to run away together. But before they can leave, Tony is caught in a rumble, and accidentally kills Bernardo. While Marias friends all urge her to stay away, she vows to find Tony ... but will she get to him before the Sharks do?
With music by Leonard Berstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is perhaps one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of all time.
Did you miss our dinner theater presentation of Suds this February? Well, heres your chance to catch this hit musical revue that had audiences raving, as we present Suds for a special encore August 1-3 and 7-9. Poor Cindy is having a horrible birthday - not only does she have to work at the Laundromat, but she has just received word from her pen-pal boyfriend that she is dumping her for someone with better penmanship. Just as she has lost all hope in love, her guardian angels arrive to help the situation ... if only they could agree on the right course of action. Can Cindys birthday get any better, or is it only downhill from here?
This summers version of Suds will be performed by the same cast as Februarys production.
To finish out the summer well take you on a acation in beautiful Monte Carlo ... the only catch is that your traveling companion is a real deadbeat - literally! The zany comedy Lucky Stiff hits the boards for three weekends, August 15-17, 21-24 and 28-30. Shoe salesman Harry Witherspoon stands to inherit six million dollars from his recently deceased uncle, provided he first takes him on avaction to Monte Carlo. If he fails, the money is turned over to the Unviersal Dog Home of Brooklyn. But Harry is certainly up for a test of wills, as he must face his uncles insanely jealous - not to mention leggally blind - mistress and her much put-upon optometrist. Throw in an over-zealous representative from the dog home and you have a fast-paced, energetic comedy chock full of memorable characters and bizarre circumstances. What a way to end the summer season!
Tickets for all Straw Hat shows will be on sale mid-May.
