A review by Roger Smith

If you are in need of a fun evening, get yourself to the duckyard at the Ashtabula Arts Center for the G. B. Community Theatres production of Honk, the ugly duckling in musical form.

The story begins when a swans egg mistakenly winds up in the nest of Ida, the mother duck. When the eggs finally hatch it is evident that something is amiss, for the baby looks nothing like the other ducklings in the brood. Then begins the effort to try to be like everyone else from the nest, but it just doesnt work.

Jacob Lowe as Ugly, the sygnet, is amazing in the role. From his opening HONK! to the finale, Jacob shows what talent he has. This youngster will go places if he chooses to do so. In the role of Ida, Uglys mother, Linda Fundis wows the audience with her vocal renditions, not to mention her wobbly duck walk and motherly quacks.

Phil Mullet was perfectly cast in the roles of the turkey and the bullfrog, having to waddle and leap about the stage. His portrayal of those animals was excellent. Cast in the role of the Cat in the duckyard, Mark Pendleton, was the picture of evil hoping to find a tender young snack and trying to abducked Ugly.

So many other barnyard animals were present to either make fun of Ugly or to cheer him on when he finally decided that he was OK just as himself. The chorus of dancers and singers made the play even more exciting to see.

Honk is not just for the very young, but it is for the young at heart; this play would make a wonderful Christmas holiday tradition.

The confluence of talent and hard work makes this show one that is worth the 21/2 hour sit. Patrons laugh and patrons cry, and in the end, patrons cheer.

Usually, I go to church on Sunday morning. Sunday, I chose not to go to church, but I did go to see Honk in the afternoon. About halfway through the production I thought that every priest, minister and pastor could have preached the story of Honk from the pulpit.

The show continues at the arts center today and Saturday at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday. Same times and days next week. Tickets may be reserved by phoning the arts center.

Dinner will be served at the Ashtbula Arts Center prior to two Saturday performances of Honk.

Cost for the evening is $21 adults and $18 children, which includes the meal and ticket to the theater. The menu will include: assorted greens (Pondweed) with mandarin oranges, roasted cornish hen(rietta) a la orange, (bull frog) Green Beans, (even a potato has nice eyes) roasted potatoes, Croissants (tres chic), and (Her Grace's) royal trifle. Assorted beverages will also be provided.

Everything's Just Ducky!:

Musical Honk! reminds us that "it takes all sorts" to make a world

If you sometimes feel like you dont fit in, youre not alone. And its OK not to be just like everyone else. In fact, the world would be pretty boring if everyone always quacked, and no one ever honked.

Thats the message intended for audience members young and old in the new musical Honk! on stage now at the G.B. Community Theatre.

The musical opens with two anxious ducks, Drake and Ida (Doug Anderson and Linda Fundis), awaiting the hatching of their eggs. One by one the little eggs open up to reveal perfect little yellow ducklings ... until out of the final egg steps a gawky, unsightly, large brown bird. Right from the start Ida realizes that her little Ugly (Jacob Lowe) is very different from the rest of his family, but it only takes one large hug from her overgrown son to convince her that looks do not change a mothers love.

However, the rest of the animals in the duckyard are not as welcoming, as even Uglys father and siblings join in to tease Ugly about his appearance and his loud and bothersome honk. The only animal who seems to befriend Ugly is the Cat (Mark Pendleton), who plays on Uglys naivet and lures him away from the duckyard to have lunch ... although Ugly is unaware that the afternoons menu includes roast duck!

While Ugly does manage to escape the evil Cats lunch time plan, he then finds himself lost in a an unknown and frightening world away from the duckyard. Unaware that his mother has arranged a search party to find him, Ugly attempts to find his own way home. Along the way he meets up with several memorable characters, all of whom teach him a different lesson about being accepted for who he is.

Theres the Old Womans domesticated housecat, Queenie (Karen Zondag), and pet hen, Lowbutt (Therese Scharf), who tell Ugly that it takes all sorts. And the bullfrog (Phil Mullet), who teaches him to love himself warts and all. And finally, Penny (Karen Zondag), a beautiful swan whom Ugly realizes shares his loud honking cry.

While the characters in Honk! may make the show sound like a childrens musical, rest assured that adults are just as likely to find entertainment in the very comical and whimsical show. Many of the song lyrics are clever and witty, as well as genuinely moving. Children will learn from the musical valuable lessons about loving themselves for who they are and accepting the differences in others - the same lessons that sometimes all adults need to be reminded of as well.

Honk! is directed by Debra Greene-Lowe, with musical direction provided by Alex Lowe.

The musical will run three weekends, October 31 - November 2, November 7 - 9, and 14-16. Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays curtain is 3:00 p.m.

In addition, dinner will be served at the Arts Center prior to two Saturday performances of Honk! On November 8 and 15, you can enjoy a meal served in the Arts Centers gallery prior to the show in the theater. Cost for the evening is $21 adults and $18 children, which includes the meal and ticket to the theater.

The menu for the dinner includes:

Assorted Greens (pondweed) w/ Mandarin Oranges
Roasted Cornish Hen(rietta) a la Orange
(Bull Frog) Green Beans
(Even a Potato Has Nice Eyes) Roasted Potatoes
Croissants (tres chic)
(Her Graces) Royal Trifle
Assorted Beverages
