Winter has finally arrived in northeastern Ohio and our 2004-2005 season of G.B. Community Theatre is in full swing.
This season has been an exciting one as we began our season with productions of Steel Magnolias, and Cabaret, Coming soon will be Biloxi Blues, Death of a Salesman, and Picasso at the Lapin Agile, in addition to a teen show, "School House Rock! Live!" and our youth theatre production of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."
Following a break for the holidays, GB Theatre returns in January with the comedy "BILOXI BLUES," the second in Neil Simons trilogy following the life of young Eugene Jerome.
When we last met young Eugene, he was coping with adolescence in 1930s Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Now enlisted in the Army during the time of WWII, Eugene announces early on his his four goals to be accomplished before leaving the military: to become a writer, fall in love, lose his virginity, and not die.
But these goals may not be quite as easy to achieve as Eugene hopes, as he and his fellow bunkmates must endure a tough and unpredictable drill sergeant and the daily mess in the mess hall, in addition to the rigors of religious discrimination, romance and lost virginity.
Biloxi Blues will run for three weekends, January 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23.
Our next show takes us away from the dreams of a young aspiring writer and onto the reality of the American Dream, with the classic drama "DEATH OF A SALESMAN."
First produced in NY in 1949, "Death of a Salesman" won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play. Its central character, Willy Loman, has become an American classic: the tired, worn-out salesman whose dreams have disintegrated as he struggles to come out on top. Riddled with a sense of self-guilt and failure, he finally decides that a man "can be worth more dead than alive," and makes the ultimate sacrifice.
Willy's tragedy is revealed gradually through his interactions with his wife Linda, sons Biff and Happy, his neighbor, his boss, and other associates. This is the "American Dream,"turned nightmare - the story of a simple, flawed man who spends a lifetime trying to become the man he sees reflected in his loved one's eyes. Death of a Salesman will run February 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27.
The final show of the season is a comedic look at what could happen if two historically important figures had a chance meeting.
Written by actor Steve Martin, PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE" revolves around an imaginary meeting in 1904 between a passionate and unknown Pablo Picasso and a fiery - and equally unproven - Albert Einstein. But in the wild and crazy world of Martin, this is not a battle of art versus science, but instead a sparring match between two great thinkers that is both ludicrous and thought provoking. Probability, lust, artistic integrity and the future are all topics on the table in the Parisian pub called the Lapin Agile, as the two great minds discuss the years to come.
Picasso will finish out the season with performances April 1-3, 8-10 and 15-17.
Other Special Events this season include a Youth Theatre production of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" on March 10 - 13 and a Teen Theatre production, "Schoolhouse Rock! Live!" March 17 - 20.
We hope youll join us for another exciting and memorable season of theater at G.B.!
