The G. B. Community Theatre performance of Death of a Salesman will run February 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27th. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8:00 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 3:00 p.m. Directed by Cathy Lawson of Ashtabula, Death of a Salesman is the story of Willy Loman, a traveling salesman who is desperately trying to scrape together a living as he slides into old age. Played by Fred Robsel of Ashtabula, Willie has spent all of his working life struggling for wealth, always believing that his big break was right around the corner and never understanding why he couldnt find success and happiness.
Now, having been fired from his job of thirty-four years, Willy struggles to hold onto his delusions. He talks to himself and to the ghosts of the past as boiling resentments over his sons lack of ambition rise to the surface and the reality of broken down cars and refrigerators force him to come face to face with his lifetime of failure.
Willys wife, Linda, played by Linda Fundis of Austinburg, maintains her love for Willy even through his lies. As his mind unravels before her eyes, she continues to be protective and motherly. Linda is Willys foundation of support so he says in the first scene, says Fundis. She does everything for Willy. She even takes his shoes off for him and puts on his slippers. Willy has raised his sons, Biff and Happy, to follow his philosophy, always advising them to Be liked and you will never want. Biff, played by Josh Theilan of Ashtabula, is the oldest of the boys. Biff is angry and full of resentment for his father. At the age of thirty-four, he is unable to hold a steady job. Willy calls Biff a lazy bum but nevertheless continues to believe that Biff will someday be a success and encourages him to ask an old boss for a business loan which Willy is convinced will be the answer to all of his dreams.
Happy, his youngest son, is very optimistic, says Eric Grapatin of Perry who plays the role. Like Willy, hes always looking on the better side things. However he is driven by his love for women and he blinds himself to whats really happening around him. He pretends to look up to Willy but knows Hes no hot-shot selling man.
Willys tragedy is revealed gradually throughout the show through his interactions with his family, his neighbor, boss and other associates until he finally concludes that A man can be worth more dead than alive.
Arthur Millers powerful and moving play was first produced in New York in 1949 and quickly established itself as one of Americas theatrical treasures. Firmly rooted in the 1940s, Death of a Salesman, which won the Pulitzer Prize and Tony award for best play, has found new relevance for audiences of today who live in a decade of downsizing and economic struggles. There are many, many levels to this play, says Linda Fundis. Many people will be able to identify with the characters in Willys life. His sons who never quite measure up, his wife who is ignored or stifled on a daily basis, and his neighbor who Willy feels in life-long competition with--and then there is his boss who lets him go when Willy isnt able to drive the seven hundred miles weekly. Its a story that could happen in any time period that many people can relate to and respect, says Eric Grapatin. I know this is going to be a show that Northeast Ohio wont want to miss!
Tickets are on sale now and are $12 for patrons, $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and $7 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased by phoning (440) 964-3396. The Ashtabula Arts Center is located at 2928 West 13th Street, Ashtabula and is funded in part by the Ohio Arts Council.
