Area hunter gives up guns in favor of cameras.
As a hunter, Jerry Mace was used to having to wait patiently for the perfect shot. Now that he has sidelined his rifle in favor of a camera, he still spends hours sitting silently in blinds, waiting for the lighting and wildlife to fill his lens in the manner in which he is attempting to capture.
An exhibit of Mace’s wildlife and landscape photography will be on display at the Arts Center from November 8- 27. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, November 15, from 7 - 8:30 p.m.
A native of West Virginia, Mace began taking pictures at the age of eleven, after receiving a Roy Rodgers box camera as a gift. That gift began his process of chronicling the life of his family and friends in photograph form, and taught him some of his earliest lessons in photography.
Having never taken a formal class in photography, Mace has used his own natural skills and abilities to determine correct procedures for capturing wildlife on film. He does not snap pictures haphazardly; instead, he waits for hours until the lighting and the subject matter are aligned just perfectly, even if it means an entire day is spent focusing on one particular shot. Some days this would lend to many rolls of film being used; more often than not, however, this meant heading home empty handed and returning later to try again.
Mace focuses his energy on wildlife and pastoral landscapes. Among his subject matter are bears, moose, elk, snow owls, mountain goats, wolves, bobcats, mountain lions, bald eagles, ospreys and numerous other bird species. He has also photographed Amish life, farms and early morning fields, in addition to other areas of rural northeastern Ohio.
Admission to the gallery is free.
