The Arts Center will host a very special exhibit featuring selections from the corporate collection of the investment firm A.G. Edwards & Sons throughout the months of September and October.
The Corporate Art Collection was created in 1967, and contains more than 4,000 works by noted American and European artists. Several different types of artwork are represented in the collection, including lithographs, engravings, woodcuts, serigraphs, gelatin silver and platinum prints, as well as mixed media. It was during the 1980s that the collection experienced significant growth, with the addition of several vintage and contemporary poster graphics, as well as vintage and contemporary photographs. During the 1990s there was another expansion, as contemporary prints by abstract and figurative artists were acquired by the collection.
In 1991, A.G. Edwards created the traveling exhibit program, which enabled smaller arts and cultural organizations to bring an election of works into the community for display. In the past 11 years the traveling exhibit program has visited over 30 venues, including such places as the Asheville Museum of Art in Asheville, North Carolina, the Walton Art Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Tyler Museum of Art in Tyler, Texas, the Anniston Museum of Natural History in Anniston, Alabama, and the Long Island Museum in Smithtown, New York.
The Ashtabula Arts Center exhibit will feature approximately 20 works, all grouped under the theme of “American Spirit.” Dating between 1917 and 1999, the exhibit includes many images of the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, and war memoribilia, as well as bond posters and vintage WWII era photography. Among the works on display will be three Peter Kaplan dye transfer prints, a Robert Rouschenberg serigraph with postcard collage entitled 'Statue of Liberty,' a mint condition Andy Warhol screenprint entitled 'Uncle Sam,' and a six screen lithograph of a wavering U.S. flag by Vito Acconci.
The exhibit will be on display from September 10 through November 1. Admission to the gallery is free.
