"More Harm Than Good"
An Exhibition by Ryan Humphrey

The Ashtabula Arts Center is pleased to present “More Harm Than Good,” an exhibition by Ashtabula native Ryan Humphrey. The exhibit will be on display in the gallery January 5 - 31.

This exhibition will feature several series of work done by Humphrey over the last three years, as well as some site specific installations created especially for this show.

In this particular show Humphrey confronts how his upbringing in Ashtabula has influenced him, and how it has been vital to his artwork. Humphrey, who currently lives and works in New York City, used his childhood in Ashtabula as a place to experiment and discover. In a small town where high school football and stripmall shopping are the norm, Humphrey spent his youth playing in old
factories, utilizing old loading docks and parking lots for skateboarding and BMX biking, and experimenting with spraypaint and graffiti. These sorts of activities were not condoned; however, they usually went unnoticed, and Humphrey was often free to do what he liked.

The side gallery will feature some of the paintings which were recently on display for Humphrey’s solo show at Rocket Projects in Miami, Florida. These paintings are abstracted landscape paintings which were derived from photos that Humphrey took of Lake Erie.

The main gallery will feature small artworks, including snapshots, sketchbooks, and Humphrey Industries Product Boxes (which were exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art), as well as some new installations.

A native of Ashtabula, Humphrey received his BFA from Ohio University in Athens, OH, and his MFA from Hunter College in New York City.

Humphrey has had his work exhibited across the country. He is represented by Caren Golden Fine Art in New York, and Rocket Projects in Miami.

“More Harm Than Good” will be on display January 5 - 31.
