Optical Art Paintings by Don Tiitto
March 5 - 30
Opening reception on Friday, March 12, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
The Ashtabula Arts Center will host an exhibit of paintings by local artist Don Tiitto throughout the month of March.
An Ashtabula native, Tiitto studied art at both the Cleveland Institute of Art and Kent State University. However, Tiitto credits his former art teacher at Harbor High School for his first formal training in the subject.
“I was lucky to have Fred Kline for an art teacher,” says Tiitto. “He taught us art history as well as technique, and allowed us to go to the beach and draw during our classes.”
Tiitto’s first optical art painting was accepted into the May Show at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1962. The judge for that show was Vincent Price, a well-known actor, art critic and art collector. Since that time, Tiitto’s work has been seen at other May shows, as well as some smaller galleries in the Cleveland and Kent areas.
One of the highlights of Tiitto’s art experience was meeting pop artist Roy Lichtenstein at Rutgers University in the 1960s. The artist took Tiitto to his home and studio loft in New York City, where Tiitto observed him working on his cartoon paintings of George Washington and Mickey Mouse, later to become icons in American art history.
Tiitto describes his art as “a human experience that gives an individual the opportunity to feel a response to our complex world through a visual medium, be it realistic, abstract or pure design.”
Gallery hours are: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Mon. - Thurs., 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fri, & Sat.

Kiwanis Club Competition
April 2 - May 3
Opening Reception on Thursday, April 15, 6 - 7 p.m.
The annual Kiwanis Club Competition will take place at the Arts Center again throughout the month of April.
Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ashtabula, this annual exhibit and competition is open to junior and senior high school
students in the Ashtabula Area Schools. This unique exhibit gives us an opportunity to showcase the talented art students of the Ashtabula area and encourage the development of outstanding art students.
All entries in the competition will be on display in the Arts Center gallery from April 2 - May 3. There will be a reception held on Thursday, April 15, from 6 - 7 p.m., at which time the scholarship awards will be announced.
Those students whose artwork is chosen for an award will have the opportunity to participate in a techniques class at the Arts Center which has been arranged just for them.
Over the past several years a number of the Kiwanis Scholarship Competition winners have gone on to college careers in art and often with substantial scholarship money. By providing this opportunity for local students, the Kiwanis Club is adding to the skills and experiences of the students, as well as helping them to qualify for college scholarship money.
Thank you to all of the Kiwanis members for their support of the Arts Center and the local visual arts students.
Gallery hours are: 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Mon. - Thurs., 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fri, & Sat.
The gallery is also open during all G.B. Theater and Straw Hat Theater shows.
