Watercolor Paintings by Alix Travis
June 1 - 30
Opening Reception on Friday, June 4, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
The Arts Center will host an exhibit by watercolor artist Alix Travis June 1 - 30 in the gallery.
The primary subject of Travis’ paintings is man’s mark on the landscape. A rotting barn surrounded by beautiful mountaintops or trees with brilliant autumn leaves. A field of bright golden soybeans with a rusting oil well in the
center. A metropolitan skyline foreshadowed by a tiny church in the middle of an open field.
She strives to make her paintings seem “unlabored.” In her own words: “Soft edges outnumber hard. Paint is rarely layered and I employ few special effects. The overall impression is one of pulsating light punctuated by rich darks and a sense of history.”
A Cleveland resident, Travis is a member of the Midwest Transparent Watercolor Society and the Creative Artists Association. Her works have won awards at the Valley Art Center 31st Annual Juried Exhibition and Competition in Chagrin Falls, and the Creative Artists Association 50th Anniversary Exhibition.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 4, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Works by the Lake Shore Artists
May 5 - 30
Opening reception on Friday, May 14, 7 - 9 p.m.
The Ashtabula Arts Center is proud to host an exhibition of works by the Lake Shore Artists group throughout the month of May. The exhibit will run May 5 – 30 in the gallery of the Arts Center, with an opening reception for the artists to be held Friday, May 14, from 7 – 9 p.m.
Several types of artwork will be on display during the exhibit, including oil, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, wood carving graphics and painted furniture.
Formed in 1973 under the name “Professional Artists of Ashtabula County,” the Lake Shore Artists group was at first open only to professional artists, with associate memberships available to educators, amateur artists and art students. In 1975, with membership in the group steadily growing, the name was changed to Lake Shore Artists, and the focus of the group switched to reflect the desires of all persons interested in the visual arts.
Currently the Lake Shore Artists meet at the Arts Center on the second Friday of each month to critique works, share information and have demonstrations in technique. Anyone wishing to join the group is invited to attend a meeting, or contact Jan Bidlack at 466-3448 for more information.
Many of the group’s works will be available for sale during the exhibit.
