AUGUST EXHIBIT - ERIC SCHWARZ:
|
Posted: Tuesday, July 06, 2004
The August exhibit at the Ashtabula Arts Center will feature Eric Schwarz and his woodturnings.
Schwarz began woodturning in the 7th grade, driven by the need to repair a baseball bat. This led Eric to turning bowls from fruitwoods that had been discarded from his family's orchard.
By the age of 25 his skills had progressed and he was introduced to antique and primitive turnings. The compliments of friends and their interest in his work fed his ego enough to keep him productive.
Under the guidance of his wife, Julian, Schwarz attended a workshop at Cleveland State University that featured Bert Marsh, a master wood turner from England. After the
seminar he returned home with a renewed passion for woodturning.
Schwarz learned new techniques and was introduced to new clubs. He soon became a member of the national club of American Association of Woodturners and the Northcoast Woodturners, a local club based in Cleveland. He is currently a member of Western New York Woodturners.
Schwarz is a full time industrial sales manager, a husband, a father, and a boater. He has a good eye for wood, grain and texture and works with a medium that he obtains locally.
For the most part he starts every piece with the same expectation, saying "I let the wood determine what its final shape will become…I anticipate giving a dead tree new life."
The exhibit will run August 3-31. An opening reception for the artist will be on Friday, August 13, from 7-830 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free.

JULY EXHIBIT - GERALD ROUGE:
|
Posted: Tuesday, July 06, 2004
The oil paintings of Gerald L. Rouge will be on display in the Ashtabula Arts Center Gallery throughout July.
A graduate of Cleveland Institute of Art, Rouge began his career as an art studio illustrator. He worked in this medium for 30 years, finally leaving in 1995 to establish his credentials as a fine art painter.
Rouge paints primarily in oils to achieve the rich colors, textures and
permanency that the paint provides. He is particularly interested in painting
landscapes and has found that living northeastern Ohio has given him plenty of opportunity and a plethora of subject matter. He has captured many landscapes of woods and streams in the area, seeking out the abstract quality of that particular scene.
Says Rouge, "It is crucial to me to draw on the emotions that attracted me when first viewing the scene. The painting should depict a continuance rather than a moment frozen in time. The stream I paint will continue to flow and the seasons will advance through their cycles as they always have."
Rouge chooses not to strip away the real meaning of art by analyzing his work too much. He feels that the purpose of art is to be enjoyed evoke emotion. Rouge states that a successful painting to him is "sharing the pleasure of walking by a stream or wooded path and being able to share that feeling through his work."
While landscapes comprise the majority of Rouge's works, he has also expanded his creative boundaries with still lifes and experimental paintings. Travels overseas have also added to his more unusual paintings.
Rouge has given one man shows at the Sandusky Fine Arts Center, The Meyer Center in Chardon, North Chagrin Nature Center and the West Woods Nature Center. His work has also been on display at Imagery Gallery in Gates Mills and at Goodwin Avenue Gallery in Burton Ohio.
The Ashtabula Arts Center's gallery exhibition of Gerald L. Rouge's work will run from July 1st through July 30th. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, July 9th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free.
