SEPTEMBER EXHIBIT - SANDY SHELENBERGER:
|
Posted: Thursday, August 19, 2004
The Ashtabula Arts Center is pleased to host an exhibit of contemporary quilts by Conneaut artist Sandy Shelenberger. The exhibit will run Sept. 2-28 in the gallery.
The exhibit, entitled "Personal Poetry" is a look at life through Shelenberger's eyes. The pieces in this exhibit were made using a variety of surface design techniques using fabric paints and dyes including airbrushing, painting, screen printing, thermofax printing, fabric dying, photo transfer, and stamping. There is no commercially printed fabric in this exhibit; each piece started with white muslin. Shelenberger says she wanted to challenge herself to create all of the fabric used, including the backing.
"Poetry is an intimate form of communications that evokes feelings and emotions,” says Shelenberger. “Poetry can be visual or written. The same elements as written poetry: rhythm, pattern, repetition can be found in the visual textile art. This personal journey is a combination of textile art, words and poetry."
She says that the exhibit is intended to be a positive message about process and working through difficulties.
Shelenberger has been an artist in the textile medium for 18 years. She has exhibited her work in several art exhibits, and her quilts have traveled abroad to Prague, Czechoslovakia and Paris, France. She has received awards from Lake Farm Park Quilt Show, Ashtabula Arts Center Juried Show, Eastern County Juried Art Show, and the Conneaut Bicentennial Art Show. Her textiles are held in private collections in the US and Switzerland.
An opening reception for Shelenberger will be held in the gallery on Fri., Sept. 10 from 7-8:30 p.m. Admission is free.
