In celebration of black history month, the Ashtabula Arts Center is presenting a very special exhibit of African baskets. The exhibit will be on display from February 8th through March 30th.

This exhibit includes authentic baskets from many parts of Africa including Kenya, Bayei, Zululand, Cameroon and others. Many of the baskets are designed for practical uses such head protection, straining and food preparation and storage. The techniques all originated in Africa and include twining, coiling, braiding and open weave. We will also have African fabrics on display in the gallery.

During the course of the exhibit, Venie Hinson owner of the collection and basket weaver, will present programs to school students. She will discuss the origin of the baskets, their uses and the techniques represented. Students visiting the exhibit will also make their own basket with Venie’s guidance.
