By Pamela Hammond Volunteer Coordinator As signs for back-to-school sales fill department store windows I cling desperately to the final days of summer, hoping to extend the season as long as possible. I’ve enjoyed woodland hikes, alfresco dinners with friends and a fabulous vacation to Hawaii. I’m not yet ready to even think about pulling out the fall jackets or stocking up on my supply of novels for wintertime reading! Here at the Arts Center, summer has been a time of whirlwind activity. I’ve continued to meet more and more of our volunteers, and I am beginning to understand why so many of you come back to volunteer time and time again - you are having such good times! Watching you work together would provide a compelling argument to anyone looking for a reason to pick up the phone and volunteer for the first time. You are more than just people working together on joint projects - you have become friends. Friends who talk and friends who listen, friends who make an effort to see life through each other’s eyes, friends who pitch in to help each other during those unexpected and unavoidable catastrophes, friends who meet newcomers with a smile and a kind word. At the same time, your extraordinary efforts make a much-needed contribution toward making our community a better place to live. All of us at the Arts Center want to say “thank you!” Your contributions are paramount to making all of our productions and activities a success! |
